What is a J-1 visa?

The J-1 nonimmigrant visa allows foreign nationals to temporarily live or work in the U.S. as part of a cultural, educational, or skills exchange program.

Individuals under the J-1 program must be sponsored by a U.S. Department of State–approved organization and participate in an approved exchange category.

How to apply for a J-1 visa

The process usually includes sponsorship, DS-2019, SEVIS fee, DS-160, interview, and entry.

1. Secure a Department of State–approved program sponsor.
2. Receive and sign Form DS-2019 from your sponsor (SEVIS).
3. Pay the I-901 SEVIS fee (often $220).
4. File the DS-160 online and keep the confirmation page.
5. Schedule and attend your visa interview (if required).
6. Enter the U.S. with your visa + DS-2019 and receive I-94/admission stamp.
